I was lucky enough to dine at Osteria Francescana, and here’s my honest review.

First Impressions: A Modern Yet Intimate Atmosphere

Unlike the rustic, cozy trattorias scattered across Modena, Osteria Francescana is sleek, minimalist, and almost gallery-like in its design. The walls are adorned with contemporary art, and the space is quiet, allowing you to focus entirely on the food. Despite its exclusivity, the atmosphere was welcoming, not intimidating, with staff that exuded warmth and enthusiasm.

The Tasting Menu: A Culinary Masterpiece

Osteria Francescana offers two tasting menus—one focusing on reinvented Italian classics and the other, a journey through Massimo Bottura’s most iconic dishes. I opted for the latter, eager to experience the dishes that made this restaurant famous.

Highlights of the Meal

“Five Ages of Parmigiano Reggiano” – This dish alone was worth the trip. It showcased Parmigiano in five different textures and temperatures, from a creamy fondue to a delicate crisp. The depth of flavor was astonishing.

“Oops! I Dropped the Lemon Tart” – A playful yet exquisite take on a classic dessert, featuring a deconstructed lemon tart that balanced sweet, tart, and buttery flavors perfectly.

“The Crunchy Part of the Lasagna” – Inspired by the childhood love for the crispy edges of baked lasagna, this dish combined rich ragu, delicate pasta, and a perfectly crisp top layer. It was a nostalgic bite wrapped in gourmet execution.

Every course was art on a plate, blending classic Italian ingredients with bold creativity.

Service and Wine Pairing

The service was impeccable, with knowledgeable sommeliers suggesting perfect pairings for each dish.
