Is El Celler de Can Roca in Girona Spain’s Best Restaurant?

When it comes to fine dining in Spain, few restaurants have reached the legendary status of El Celler de Can Roca in Girona. Run by the Roca brothers—Joan (head chef), Josep (sommelier), and Jordi (pastry chef)—this three-Michelin-starred restaurant has been named The Best Restaurant in the World multiple times. But does it truly live up to the hype? I had the chance to experience it firsthand, and here’s my honest take.

First Impressions: A Warm Welcome

Unlike many world-famous restaurants, El Celler de Can Roca doesn’t feel pretentious. The moment I arrived, I was welcomed with genuine warmth. The restaurant itself is a stunning mix of modern design and natural elements, with an open, glass-walled dining space that feels elegant yet inviting. The service was impeccable—professional yet friendly, making me feel more like a guest in the Roca family home rather than just another diner.

The Tasting Menu: A Symphony of Flavors

El Celler de Can Roca offers an ever-evolving tasting menu that showcases both Catalan tradition and cutting-edge creativity. Every dish told a story, blending seasonal ingredients with avant-garde techniques.

Highlights of the Meal:

“The World” Appetizer – A selection of small bites inspired by different global cuisines, presented in a beautiful globe-shaped dish. It was both playful and delicious.

Charcoal-Grilled Prawn – Served with crispy seaweed and infused with seawater essence, this dish was a pure, concentrated taste of the Mediterranean.

Iberian Suckling Pig – Perfectly crispy on the outside, incredibly tender inside, and paired with a light, tangy peach sauce that balanced the richness.

“Anarchy” Dessert – A wild, artistic creation by Jordi Roca, featuring chocolate, citrus, flowers, and spices—a chaotic but stunning end to the meal.
